Why This Nonprofit Exists: A Personal Story

I never imagined myself running a nonprofit. Honestly, I didn’t even know where to start. But I did know one thing: life had taught me what it feels like to struggle, to go without, and to feel unseen. And I couldn’t just stand by and watch others go through the same without trying to do something about it.
For me, Neighbour to Neighbour isn’t just about a thrift store or free events. It’s about community, dignity, and remembering that no one should feel alone in their hardest moments. Every item donated, every dollar raised, every smile I see at our events — it all carries the weight of a much bigger story.
My “Why”
I grew up learning how heavy cycles of struggle and pain can be. As an adult, I found myself facing my own battles — depression, anxiety, broken relationships, and the fear of becoming what I swore I wouldn’t.
I remember looking in the mirror and not even recognizing who I was. I felt like I was drowning in survival, and I knew if I didn’t change, my daughters would inherit the same wounds I was trying so hard to escape.
That realization — that I could either repeat the cycle or break it — became my turning point. Healing wasn’t easy. It was messy, uncomfortable, and at times it felt impossible. But step by step, I began returning to myself. And along the way, I realized something: healing is not just about me. It’s about lifting others up while you rise.
Serving While Healing
Neighbour to Neighbour was born out of that truth. It’s a reflection of both my pain and my hope.
When I host free events, when families find clothes, furniture, or books without having to worry about the cost, it reminds me of the times I wished someone would just extend a hand my way.
This nonprofit is proof that we can transform our wounds into something bigger — something that helps others heal, too. It’s not charity. It’s not a handout. It’s a reminder that we are all connected, and sometimes the greatest gift we can give each other is community.
More Than a Cup of Sugar
Our name — Neighbour to Neighbour: More Than a Cup of Sugar — says it all. It’s about going beyond small talk and surface-level gestures. It’s about showing up for each other, whether through donations, volunteering, coaching, or simply being present.
I run this nonprofit because I believe everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued. And because I know what it’s like to feel the opposite.
The Truth About Your Nonprofit Founder
At the end of the day, I’m not a perfect founder or some polished success story. I’m just a woman who decided to take her truth, her scars, and her struggles and turn them into something that could matter for others.
Neighbour to Neighbour is my way of saying: you are not alone, and together, we can create something better.
