A pair of hands holding a box of clothing donations

At Neighbour to Neighbour, we believe in the power of community and the impact of small acts of kindness. Our mission has always been to support our neighbours facing financial challenges by providing them with access to essential items. Whether it's through our giveaway events or our newly launched online thrift store, every contribution you make helps us make a positive difference.

If you're wondering how you can help and what items we're in need of, this guide is for you. We'll walk you through the donation process and provide tips on how to prepare your items for drop-off. Let's join hands and ensure that our community continues to thrive!

What We Accept:

At Neighbour to Neighbour, we welcome a wide range of small and medium-sized items that can make a significant difference in the lives of our neighbours. This includes non-perishable food items, household essentials, small appliances, clothing, shoes, accessories, baby items, and so much more. The possibilities are vast, and we're grateful for every contribution that helps us support those in need.

What We Don't Accept:

While we appreciate your generosity, there are a few items that we are unable to accept at this time. These include large-ticket items such as couches, as our current storage space and transportation capacity are limited. However, we hope to expand our capabilities in the future to accommodate larger items.

Preparing Your Donations:

To ensure that your donations can provide maximum benefit, please take a moment to prepare them thoughtfully. Make sure the items are clean and free of excessive wear and tear beyond repair. This helps us offer quality items to our community, ensuring that they can serve their intended purpose effectively.

Drop-Off or Pick-Up:

Donating to Neighbour to Neighbour is convenient and flexible. You have two options:

1. Drop-Off: You can drop off your donations on the morning of our giveaway event at the event location. Keep an eye out for event announcements where we'll disclose the location. Your contributions will go directly to those in need.

2. Coordinate with Us: If you're unable to make it to our event or have items that require special arrangements, feel free to contact us. We can coordinate a drop-off or pick-up (please note that pick-ups may require a fee based on items and distance). Your convenience and support are our top priorities.

The Impact of Your Donation:

When you choose to donate to Neighbour to Neighbour, you're making a significant impact on our community. Your contributions provide a lifeline to our neighbours facing financial difficulties, allowing them to access essential items for free at our events and at affordable prices in our online thrift store. Together, we can help our neighbours stay afloat during challenging times and ensure they have what they need to thrive.

In closing, we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has contributed and supported us on this journey. Your kindness and generosity drive our mission, and we couldn't do it without you. Together, we are making our community a better place for all.

Building Community, One Giveaway at a Time - The Backstory: Neighbour to Neighbour

In a world often characterized by fast-paced living, hectic schedules, and a sense of disconnection, there are those who choose to forge a different path—a path paved with generosity, community spirit, and the unwavering belief that together, we can make a difference. Our non-profit community group is one such story—a tale of how a small idea grew into a grand gesture, and how a handful of passionate individuals transformed it into a thriving movement dedicated to giving back.

The Birth of a Simple Idea

It all began with a simple idea—a desire to solve the challenges faced by many in our community. Listing numerous items on social media platforms, coordinating pick-ups, and navigating transactional exchanges were often time-consuming and frustrating endeavors. The founder of our organization, Michelle Brady, a single mom of two teenage girls, felt this firsthand. Juggling a full-time job, she was keenly aware of the preciousness of time and the need for a more efficient and compassionate way to connect with her neighbors.

One day, Michelle had an epiphany: "Why not have a free garage sale where we could donate our items all in one place and actually connect with our neighbors instead of it being a transactional exchange?" This seemingly small idea would be the spark that ignited a powerful movement.

From Idea to Action

With a determined spirit and a vision for a more connected community, Michelle took the first steps to turn her idea into reality. She gathered a group of like-minded neighbors, and together, they organized the first "giveaway" event—a local gathering where people could freely share and take items they needed.

The response was overwhelming. The sense of community, the connections formed, and the smiles exchanged made it clear that this simple event had tapped into something profound. The shared experience was not just about the items on display; it was an experience of support, warmth, and the realization that, as neighbors, they could rely on each other.

From Local to Liftoff

Word quickly spread about these giveaway events, and the demand for more grew exponentially. The team expanded, volunteers joined in, and the events became a regular occurrence. With each event, the community bond strengthened, and the impact grew. Families found essentials they needed, individuals decluttered their homes, and the spirit of giving back flourished.

As the organization continued to grow, it extended its reach to include an online thrift store—an eco-conscious and affordable way for people to acquire items while supporting the organization's mission. Every purchase will contribute to the growth of giveaway events, and a portion of the sales will be donated to causes close to their hearts, including mental health support, youth and family services, and shelters for women and men.

The Vision Ahead

Today, our non-profit community group stands as a beacon of hope, community, and giving back. The journey from a simple idea to a thriving organization has been a testament to the power of community spirit. While they may have started small, they now dream big. They envision hosting giveaway events in different neighborhoods throughout Ottawa, reaching multiple communities right in their backyards.

As they look to the future, they remain committed to their core values of honesty, transparency, inclusivity, kindness, and the act of giving. Their organization operates in the Ottawa, Ontario area, but their online thrift store is accessible to all Canadians. They fund their initiatives through generous donations and the dedication of their passionate team.

Join the Movement

In a world where time is a precious commodity, our non-profit community group has shown that it's possible to simplify the act of giving and make everyday essentials accessible to those who may be facing financial hardships. They believe that community events should be more than just transactional exchanges—they should be experiences of support and warmth.

If you're looking for a way to connect with your community, make a positive impact, or simply be part of something bigger than yourself, consider joining the movement. Your donations, your time, and your support can make a world of difference. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected, and compassionate community—one giveaway at a time.
